Higher Penalties for Health and Safety Breaches

A new act has recently come into force which will see the penalties for imposed health and safety breaches rise. At the moment magistrates can impose a fine upto £20,000 for breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and fines of up to £5,000 for breaches of many of the Health and Safety breaches.

Imprisonment is only available for a very limited number of offences, such as breaching improvement notices or prohibition notices.

Falls From Vehicle Research Published

Health and Safety Executive have released their reports on Falls from Vehicles. Each year over 2000 accidents are reported to Health and Safety that have been caused from items falling from vehicles.

The research was done to make fleet owners, haulage companies and drivers aware of how important it is to ensure that their freight is secured on the vehicles. Over 800 major injuries occur every year, with approx. being 5 fatalities.
